Spring fever. After a relatively rough winter, things are warming up and the forest is humming with tree frogs, wood frogs, and spring peeps. Ramps (Allium tricoccum) are starting to emerge in our ramp beds. And we've set up a bee hive. Best of all, first snake of the year: an eastern garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis). #frogs #athensoh #snakes #bees #spring

While it may be windy and cold outside right now, my geraniums soak up the sun and wait for their time to flourish. Sometimes, you need to sit out for a season and conserve your energy. Nothing lasts forever. If you’re in the middle of a storm right now, invest in your health and prepare for your eventual blooming season. It’s coming.

Good morning, friends. 🌹🌹🌹

17 March 2025

Every morning over the past few days, as I open the blinds in my office and look out the window, the grass has seemed a little greener. Spring is just three days away. Deciduous trees are beginning to sprout new leaves, and faint traces of yellow pollen are starting to emerge. Today, the sky is crystal clear—a definite sign that spring is near. At the edges of the forest, a few tiny pink, white, and yellow wildflowers have begun to bloom, though they’re still too sparse to dominate the view. Yesterday, I spotted cowbirds. They’ve been gone all winter, but now they’re back, ready to help fill the spring nests of other birds. Winter is finally coming to an end, and its return feels distant, safely tucked away in the cycle of seasons.

That come before the swallow dares, and take
The winds of March with beauty." -
William Shakespeare
