A kaleidoscope of butterflies for #WorldButterflyDay. It’s also #PiDay so I feel this the symmetries of this print which I laid out with a compass and some geometric tricks, seems apt.

There are three each of the orange Isabella’s Longwings (Nymphalidae Eueides isabella), three yellow Eastern tiger swallowtails (Papilio glaucus), and three blue Red-Spotted Purples (Limenitis arthemis astyanax) in this #linocut kaleidoscope.⠀

#Fediverse, I need your help again!
tl; dr: I need a font maker software!

I'd like to convert my handwriting into a font for my research output, as I'd like to maintain my personal handwriting in my sketchnotes but I'd like the written notes to be text.
I'm already very familiar with vector graphics and lettering but never made a font so would love an open source/free font design software to start.

Elaine Lustig Cohen (1927–2016), catalog cover for the Holt, Reinhart and Winston, Inc. publishing company, 1965.

Lustig Cohen’s design career began quite unexpectedly. In 1955 her husband, Alvin Lustig, passed away. At 28 years old and with no formal training, she took on the clients and projects that her husband left behind. She soon established herself as one of the leading designers of the 1950s.

The talk that I gave about Letter Spirit (my 30 year old thesis project) in France last week has been posted as a video. #AI #ML #cogsci #hofstadter #creativity #design #typography

ML/AI, Typographic Design, and the Four “I”s

During this talk I will touch on Intuition, Insight, and Inspiration. First I will set the context by introducing the Letter Spirit project and its microdomain — work I published exactly 30 years ago as a Ph.D. student of Doug Hofstadter’s. I will spend some time discussing the role of roles (and other mental structures) in creativity and human perception. Then I’ll take a quick run through the current state of “AI” (really ML) so we get a feeling of how LLMs actually work. We will talk about WHAT MACHINES and relate them to human cognition. Finally, just as I get around to intuition, insight, and inspiration, I will run out of time.

I really like the proposed asterism symbol, ⁂, U+2042 to represent the Fediverse. “In astronomy, it refers to groups of stars in the sky, akin to constellations.”

I might just add it to my fonts, (and perhaps boot the bitcoin, ₿, U+20BF, while I'm at it) Now to see whether I like hexacles (the bestagons) or pentacles..

@daringfireball Thanks, @mwichary, for putting a name—and great photography—to a font that’s everywhere! I found Gorton embossed on a (not that old) plastic measuring cup in my kitchen.

Then I looked at Chernobyl photos—sure enough, Gorton digits galore! (And who-knows-what Cyrillic lettering.)

So I was inspired to make a Gorton web clock with soviet-era reactor control styling (I’ll reply with how to read it):
