Some Irish folklore this St Patrick’s Day: the Sídhe, the Aos sí, the fair folk, the good people, or the people of the shee from Irish folklore, who live underground. You may know the banshee, or Bean sídhe or woman of the sídhe. In fact the very word Sídhe is the term for earthen mounds like the one in my #linocut and the Aos sí are “the people of mounds.” The Sidhe evolved from a mythological people known as the Tuatha De Danaan,

Atkins’ mother died when she was still an infant, but she was close with her naturalist father & received a much more scientific education than was common for women in her time. Really enjoying working on this Arches paper. I thought the texture would hinder the pens but 2 passes with each color seems to do the trick.

A kaleidoscope of butterflies for #WorldButterflyDay. It’s also #PiDay so I feel this the symmetries of this print which I laid out with a compass and some geometric tricks, seems apt.

There are three each of the orange Isabella’s Longwings (Nymphalidae Eueides isabella), three yellow Eastern tiger swallowtails (Papilio glaucus), and three blue Red-Spotted Purples (Limenitis arthemis astyanax) in this #linocut kaleidoscope.⠀

I’ve just put five recently editioned works up on my website — this linocut included: ‘Firmament: the fourth day’. A large piece for me, the sheet measuring 43 x 38 cm. Only three prints in the edition. The other pieces are all monotypes and as such are one-off prints.

Happy birthday to Gerardus Mercator (1512-1594) renown Flemish cartographer.
What made Mercator a great #cartographer, was in fact his abilities as a #mathematician -and like those of us scientists who feel compelled also to create art he was wasn’t hindered by his immense ability as an engraver. The last of my older prints which would fit #printerSolstice2425 prompt silicon: four radiolarians of the of the spyroidea family on handmade Japanese paper. Radiolarians (or radiolaria) are a type of tiny creature -amoeboid protozoa - which produce silica mineral skeletons. They occur as zooplankton throughout the oceans and their tiny skeletal remains can be used as diagnostic fossils to date submarine sediments.
Sending out the second to last print of the Chaffinch today. Number 19 of a limited edition of 20. The Chaffinch print is from 2021.

Somehow we’ve made it to March. “In like a lion…” This is an original first edition lino block print showing a lioness and a lion, sitting in the grass, watching. I was inspired by a photograph my mother took in the Ngorongoro conservation area in Tanzania. It is called, "The Watchers, Ngorongoro". The photo gives the strong impression the lions are watching the people back. 1/2
