Have to agree with this guy about climate change, he proposes solutions which is way better than just moaning about the problem, wish a lot of people on the front line of doing stuff had this approach, much more likely to get support with solutions and ideas, I find myself shying away from the endless facts even though I know they are right, it does not encourage me to act, quite the opposite.

A project using drones to disperse tree seeds could "revolutionise" the expansion of rainforests in South West England.

The Woodland Trust says 75,000 seeds have been scattered on hills which would be inaccessible for human planting by hand.

The drones, which seeded 11 hectares of land around Bodmin in eight hours, scattered tree seeds native to rainforests, including pedunculate oak, alder, wild cherry, downy birch and hazel.

Please don’t flame me for growing this plant. The #pollinators love it and the leaves taste nice (slightly minty asafoetida).

Bark, roots and unripe berries can cause contact dermatitis and/or allergies. Ripe berries are mildly toxic in large quantities besides not tasting very good.

Um, what did I post about #GolfCourses the other day? Water wasting, pesticide-laden... WHO NEEDS IT?!!! #Rewilding, #SolarFarms, ANYTHING BUT! Let the poor starve, but keep whacking those balls, eh?!

#Pentagon Keeps Pouring Cash Into Golf Courses — Even As Trump Slashes Government Spending

The Pentagon owns 145 golf courses. As #Trump cuts key government services, we found it aims to spend on sand traps and clubhouses.

@kibcol1049 @oheso Yeah this was brought abruptly home to me when thinking about mammoths and mastodons. They are elephant cousins and elephants live in matriarchal herds where oldest mom leads by knowing where things are and how to deal with situations based on their known and new contexts.

Any, say, wooly mammoth we bring back or even a group of them isn't going to have their culture, whatever form that took as recently as 5,000 years ago.

#GolfCourses Use More Land Globally Than #Solar or #WindEnergy

Story by Mihai Andrei, February 25, 2025

"The land use of #RenewableEnergy is often criticized in public and political debates. However, a new study shows that something as frivolous as golf courses use up more land globally than solar or wind energy. Golf courses, which often serve a small number of #AffluentPeople, are also terrible for the #environment and use up a lot of #water and resources.

Competition for space

"The lush greenery you see on golf courses is a well-maintained lie. Golf courses use enormous amounts of water — sometimes in regions already facing shortages. Maintaining that flawless grass also means heavy reliance on #fertilizers and #pesticides, which seep into local waterways, harming# wildlife and #polluting #ecosystems. To make it even worse, golf courses are apparently competing with renewable energy for space.

"Every acre we allocate to one use is an acre less for another. Currently, more than 38,400 golf courses span the globe, occupying vast stretches of valuable land. Surprisingly, researchers from Germany’s Forschungszentrum Jülich found that countries (especially richer countries like the US, the UK, and Canada) dedicate far more land to golf courses than to #SolarFarms or #WindTurbines.

"Let’s put this into perspective. If you take the golf courses in just the top ten golfing countries and convert them into renewable energy, you’d get an extra 842 gigawatts (GW) of solar or 659 GW of wind capacity. And to put that into perspective, that’s more than the entire quantity of renewable energy these countries produce and are forecast to have for a few years.

Replacing golf courses with something more useful isn’t a new idea, it’s already happening in some areas. In Japan’s Hyogo Prefecture, an entire golf course now hosts 260,000 solar panels, generating 125 gigawatt-hours annually. Meanwhile, in South Korea, 'screen golf,' indoor simulated golfing experiences, provide a popular, space-efficient alternative to traditional courses."

Rewilding and a great donation

The Scottish Wildlife Trust now owns the 7618-hectare Inverbroom Estate following its largest-ever land acquisition.

The £17.5 million purchase has been made possible through a gift from a private donor.

Not quite community ownership by some way, but still. PS - for people outside of the county, Dundee is not very big - but every little helps.

Project to restore 'vital' #seagrass around #Scotland

March 1, 2025

"A £2.4m seagrass planting programme has been launched to help restore the plant in seas around the north of Scotland.

"The project aims to plant 14 hectares (34.6 acres) of seagrass, often described as a 'wonder plant' by conservationists, over the next three years.

"Seagrasses are often likened to rainforests because they provide food and shelter for thousands of species, but they have been declining globally since the 1930s.

"In the last century 92% of the plants have been lost from Britain's coasts and areas once covered by seagrass are now 'lifeless seabeds', according to research by University College London.

"The new initiative is a partnership between the Scottish Marine Environmental Enhancement Fund (#SMEEF) and Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN).

"Grants have been awarded to four organisations that cover areas from #Shetland to the #Kintyre peninsula.

"These are #MossyEarth's #WilderFirths project (based around the Black Isle), Kintyre Coastal Network's East Kintyre Biosphere, Wester Ross Fisheries Trust's seagrass planting project and Restoring Shetland's Marlie Meadows - a project by the University of the #Highlands and Islands.

"Seagrass is home to a vast number of species, and is a food source for many others.

"It can purify water and slow down waves, protecting coastal areas from flooding as a result.

"The plant also takes in #CO2, making it useful in tackling #ClimateChange.

"The partnership said Scottish seas are a special place for marine habitats like seagrass, with the country's coasts stretching 18,000km (11,185 miles) and containing 8,000 species or more."

Advice sought from those who do #NoMowMay - or know about #Rewilding gardens. Does the no mowing include before May - so that you leave it fallow until at least June? Or would the garden benefit from a trim in March/April if dry enough to mow? (If we do ever get a couple of dry days in a row here in the West of Ireland.) Conflicting advice in the past, especially from my pro-mowing partner. Aim to encourage wildflowers for pollinators.
