A corner on the One-Spot Trail between old logging railway grades. At one time the Comox Valley was laid out in parallel railway grades as they cut and yarded the ancient forest that had grown after the 1662 fire -likely caused by lightning- and the massive 1938 Sayward Fire that burned through the huge piles of logging slash and remaining standing timber between the Sayward and Comox Valleys. #forest #trees #photography #bxw #vancouverisland @trees @vi

Tree mask.

We're standing very close to the trunk of a dead juniper tree. Its bark is long gone, leaving a rippling gray-brown surface with the texture of water rippling over rocks. The trunk is only a hollow shell now, and we can see its interior through a knothole shaped like the eye socket in a horse's skull. We could imagine stepping inside the trunk, putting on this mask, and seeing the world from the tree's perspective.

Piney (white pine) hilltop with hundreds of dark trunks streaking up to the sky in neat straight lines. They're really packed in tight, giving the place a bit of extra shade and revealing narrow slivers of blue sky with white clouds in contrast, interrupted by the piney green tops.
