Fannie Lou Hamer

She was a leader in the civil rights movement, an organizer for the SNCC, and a representative of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party — not to mention the first person in her county to register people to vote before the Voting Rights Act.
Today, the march continues. Happy birthday, Mrs. Hamer — rest in power.

Every year, Pi Day is celebrated on March 14. It’s the celebration of the mathematical sign pi, and the date is symbolic because (3.14) signifies the first three digits of pi.
This Pi Day, ESSENCE celebrates the brilliance of Euphemia Lofton Haynes, the first Black woman to earn a PhD in Mathematics. A trailblazer, educator, and activist, Haynes shattered barriers, founding the math department at Miner Teachers College and mentoring generations of Black educators.
Born just 25 years after the Civil War, she understood that knowledge was power. In 1943, she made history with her doctorate, proving that Black women belonged in every space—including the world of mathematics. Her legacy continues today, with an award in her name honoring rising mathematicians.
Haynes’ story is a testament to excellence, resilience, and the unbreakable spirit of Black women. As we celebrate Pi Day, we honor her—because, just like Pi, her impact is infinite.

"We must use our lives to make the world a better place to
live, not just to acquire things. That is what we are put on
the earth for." - Dolores Huerta

"Dolores Huerta is among the most important, yet least known, activists in American history. An equal partner in co-founding the first farm workers unions with Cesar Chavez. …

“Dolores tirelessly led the fight for racial and labor justice alongside Chavez, becoming one of the most defiant feminists of the twentieth century — and she continues the fight to this day."

Patti Smith
"Freedom is inside of me. It means that I'm not hung up on anybody's idea of how I should be."

Queen of the New Wave, always high on rebellion, Patti Smith has a proud reputation for saying exactly what she thinks.

"Unlike most female rock singers, she doesn't play the vamp and she doesn't play the victim."

"It's the story of a free woman who shaped her life the into how she dreamed it."
