Frank Skornia<p>Honorable mention, because I finished it yesterday, I also read 'Water Moon' by Samantha Sotto Yambao.</p><p>It was okay I guess. I gave it 4 stars. It was a little too twee for me in some places.</p><p><a href="https://glammr.us/tags/FridayReads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FridayReads</span></a></p><p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span></p>
Frank Skornia<p>I am almost about at the end of 'Consider Phlebas' by Iain M. Banks.</p><p>I have found this book okay and rather uneven. I like the characters and I like the universe, and I'm not quite sure what precisely is disatisfying to me. I'm hoping the next Culture books are better though.</p><p><a href="https://glammr.us/tags/FridayReads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FridayReads</span></a><br><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span></p>
Frank Skornia<p>This week I'm reading 'The Garden' by Nick Newman.</p><p>So far this is an odd book that is a little sad, a little poignant, and a little creepy. It features two elderly sisters living together in the kitchen and walled garden of their stately home that has been mostly sealed off. They seem to be the only people alive. Very odd, but there is still a lot to explore.</p><p><a href="https://glammr.us/tags/FridayReads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FridayReads</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span></p>
David Brent 📚<p>Just finished How The Word is Passed by Clint Smith. ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ out of 5. My review is posted here: </p><p><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/5226181644" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">goodreads.com/review/show/5226</span><span class="invisible">181644</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Books</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/FridayReads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FridayReads</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Bookstodon</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/NonFiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NonFiction</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/History" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>History</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span></p>
Frank Skornia<p>And I'm also still listening to 'Consider Phlebas' by Iain M. Banks.</p><p>It's alright. It sort of feels like Banks didn't have enough story for the actual plot, so he contrived a bunch of difficulties for the main character to be dealing with endlessly.</p><p><a href="https://glammr.us/tags/FridayReads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FridayReads</span></a></p><p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span></p>
Frank Skornia<p>Then I started 'Water Moon' by Samantha Sotto Yambao.</p><p>I've heard good things about this book about a magical pawn shop hidden through the doorway of a popular ramen shop. The pawn shop deals in choices. It's too early to really know what that means yet. Looking forward to reading further.</p><p><a href="https://glammr.us/tags/FridayReads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FridayReads</span></a></p><p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span></p>
Frank Skornia<p>This week I finished 'Mickey 7' by Edward Ashton (it was after midnight last night, so it still counts for <a href="https://glammr.us/tags/FridayReads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FridayReads</span></a>)</p><p>This was a really entertaining book with some real solid space opera vibes. No FTL travel means that it really examines the difficulties of interstellar colonization.<br>I'm really happy there is a sequel because the story just sort of suddenly splats to an end, solving immediate problems but not much else resolved.</p><p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span></p>
David Brent 📚<p>I had a rough go with David Copperfield. Added to the DNF pile about 15% of the way through. When I struggle with a book, I make sure my next read is going to be awesome, so I'm rewarding myself with a re-read of one of my favorite <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/StephenKing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>StephenKing</span></a> books (also, just one of my favorite books), The Eyes of the Dragon. I picked up a copy at the library for the 11yo to read, but he hasn't gotten to it yet, so I'm borrowing it. 😎 <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/FridayReads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FridayReads</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Books</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Bookstodon</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Fantasy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Fantasy</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/AmReading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AmReading</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span></p>
Jules Octavian<p>“Poems Won’t Buy Beer”</p><p>Al Purdy is the patron saint of County Fence Bi-Annual and it could be said it was his poetry that inspired County Fence in the first place. Of course Al’s not alone, I also talk about Jules’ longest standing crush: Margaret Atwood. Ms. Atwood, if you’re listening, Jules would love it if you returned his calls.</p><p><a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/MargaretAtwood" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MargaretAtwood</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/AlPurdy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AlPurdy</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/CanadianPoetry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CanadianPoetry</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/CanLit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CanLit</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Canada" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Canada</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Ontario" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Ontario</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Books</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Poetry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Poetry</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Writers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Writers</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Reading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Reading</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/FridayReads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FridayReads</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/YGK" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>YGK</span></a></p><p><a href="https://countyfencemagazine.com/poems-wont-buy-beer/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">countyfencemagazine.com/poems-</span><span class="invisible">wont-buy-beer/</span></a></p>
David Brent 📚<p>About half way through The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty. It's a swashbuckling tale of a 13th Century Arabian pirate, complete with magic, sea monsters, demons, betrayal, etc. It works well in <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/audiobook" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>audiobook</span></a> format and I am enjoying it so far even though the transitions in the story are sometimes clunky. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/FridayReads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FridayReads</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Books</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Bookstodon</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Fiction</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Adventure" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Adventure</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span></p>
Frank Skornia<p>This week I'm reading 'If Beale Street Could Talk' by James Baldwin.</p><p>I'm ashamed that I've never read it before, so I'm glad we selected it for our staff book discussion this month at the library. It's a great read so far with a ton of character and style.<br><a href="https://glammr.us/tags/FridayReads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FridayReads</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span></p>
Jules Octavian<p>Jules Octavian investigates Abraham Hawley's utopian colonial ideals in this dive into the archives from 1983: Camp Bethel.</p><p><a href="https://countyfencemagazine.com/from-the-archives-camp-bethel-1983/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">countyfencemagazine.com/from-t</span><span class="invisible">he-archives-camp-bethel-1983/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/reading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>reading</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/ontario" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ontario</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Canada" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Canada</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/writersofmastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writersofmastodon</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/readers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>readers</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/indieauthor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>indieauthor</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/authors" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>authors</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/fridayreads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fridayreads</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/speculativefiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>speculativefiction</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/dreams" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dreams</span></a></p>
David Brent 📚<p>I Cheerfully Refuse by Leif Enger is definitely a slow dystopian burn and I'm still trying to figure out exactly HOW dystopian it is. Resources seem limited and barter system is in place, but people are also using cell phones and there's still something resembling a federal govt. (the President is proudly illiterate, so life imitating art or vice versa?) About 1/3 of the way through and enjoying it so far. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/FridayReads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FridayReads</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Books</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/AmReading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AmReading</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Bookstodon</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Fiction</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Dystopian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Dystopian</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Audiobooks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Audiobooks</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span></p>
Frank Skornia<p>I also started listening to 'Consider Phlebas' by Iain M. Banks on audio.</p><p>I read this one years ago, but am coming back to it now on audio, since I'm planning to work my way through the Culture books in between a couple of other fantasy series. Just at the start now, but it is nice and tasty space opera fare so far.<br><a href="https://glammr.us/tags/FridayReads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FridayReads</span></a><br><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span></p>
Frank Skornia<p>This week I'm finishing up 'Starborn: How the Stars Made us' by Roberto Trotta</p><p>I started it sometime last year, but it was shortly after I had read a very similar book focused on the Moon.<br>This is an excellent jaunt though the history of astronomy and navigation. It's both relieving and saddening to read while the culture of science in the US is being destroyed in short order.<br><a href="https://glammr.us/tags/FridayReads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FridayReads</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span></p>
David Brent 📚<p>Speech Team by Tim Murphy is definitely not one of the best audiobooks I've listened to. I find the main character (Tom Murray - hmmm, is this semi-autobiographical?) to be a bit annoying, and I can't tell if that's how he's written or if it's the audio narration. Maybe both? I was borderline ready to DNF, but decided to stick with it because it's not completely terrible. 2/3 done and I feel like the climax won't be all that climatic. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/FridayReads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FridayReads</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Bookstodon</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Books</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/AmReading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AmReading</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/LGBTQ" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LGBTQ</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span></p>

David Brent 📚<p>Bonus <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/FridayReads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FridayReads</span></a> post: if everything [waves vaguely at the world outside] is getting you down and you need your faith in humanity and basic common fucking decency restored, sit down with a copy of The Day The World Came to Town by Jim DeFede. Only a soulless worm of a person - maybe that person is occupying the Oval Office - could hate this book. I don't re-read a lot of books, but I'll be giving this one another look at some point. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/AmReading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AmReading</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Books</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Bookstodon</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/NonFiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NonFiction</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span></p>
David Brent 📚<p>I was not familiar with the work of Susan Meissner before I picked up my current read, but it seems she's quite prolific and people seem to like her books -- I'm seeing more 4- and 5-⭐ reviews on Goodreads than what I'm used to. So far, The Nature of Fragile Things is entertaining and quick-paced, though the characters are maybe a bit flat. It's a nice diversion if you enjoy historical fiction. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/FridayReads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FridayReads</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/AmReading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AmReading</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Bookstodon</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/SanFrancisco" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SanFrancisco</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span></p>
