Cy the Cyborg 🏳️⚧️♿️<p>Kev is one of 6 main characters in the wheelchair basketball comic I'm working on. He's is a retired wheelchair rugby player - hence why his chair looks so different to the other characters I've drawn so far - and when his wife (who's art is coming soon) started a wheelchair basketball team, but was struggling to get the numbers to actually play, he signed up too.<br>Personality wise, Kev is the team's jokey uncle and is meant to be a direct foil to the more serious characters on the team, like Ruby. He's already done the whole "serious athlete thing" and while he enjoys the game, at the end of the day, just there to have fun and support his wife, and remind the younger members to not get too wrapped up in it all.<br>He's a quad amputee (through the palms on his hands, above the knee on his legs) and is missing a good chunk of his tail too, making him a low-pointer on the court. Badass Britt :mastodon_lgbt:<p>I’m so frustrated. </p><p>The biologic medications I need to take to prevent pain, swelling and joint damage from rheumatoid arthritis has now caused two instances of acute liver damage in the past 12 months… </p><p>The injury I’m currently managing is NOT improving after stopping the drug that caused it. So much so, my Rheumatologist messaged me overnight to tell me not to begin new treatment as planned.</p><p>My health anxiety is obviously at its peak. </p><p>On top of this most recent liver injury, I’ve been sick 90% of 2025 with repeated infections, keeping me mostly bed/house bound. Fuck my broken immune system. </p><p>I’m at a loss for what to do. The medical system doesn’t feel like it’s built to help me manage all of this. </p><p>If I cannot take biologic medications for this condition I’ll become severely disabled very quickly. Richard<p>This is not a popular opinion, but I have come to believe that social movements do not ultimately bring systematic change. Not be a contrarian, but I think it takes the right individual that sparks the final measure that brings about real, fundamental change. Let me give some examples. </p><p>Martin Luther King, Jr. I know he didn't do it on his own, but he was a singular force, and that is authentic. </p><p>From fiction:</p><p>Gabriel Bell from the famous Star Trek: DS9 two-parter, "Past Tense" and the Bell Riots. Yes, he also very much did not do it on his own, but he was a force to be reckoned with. </p><p>John Sheridan from Babylon 5. He also did not do it on his own, he had both an immediate crew and an extended crew, but he was hands on and even died only to come back and finish the job. He ultimately made the decisions that changed history. </p><p>I know how generic I sound. I know I seem like I lack faith in the collective. Well, having lived with severe disability for 27 years, yes, I do lack faith in people at large. I know what you are willing to do to me when no one else is watching. I know it takes a single soul, the right person who possesses the qualities that the collective claims to be in favor of, but they are never actually capable of those moral values, not personally, they are not. It will take one leader to bring change.
